Project Summary
The main goal of EX is to encourage people in NYC to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle. Our final concept was a system of outdoor interventions that would motivate people to walk more while exploring new and unknown spots in NYC through a gamified experience.
Problem and Ideation
60% of US adults do not engage in the recommended amount of physical activity.
Physical inactivity is the 4th leading risk factor for global mortality.
25% of US adults are not active at all.
Locations
We chose 3 main locations, the WTC a popular tourist destination, Pier 16, a location that is unknown to many but has various activities and restaurants and Chinatown which is known for its food. During our walk from one location to another, we discovered new places and learned new things about the city and that is what lead us to the creation of the gamified experience of EX.
Concept
We wanted to create a system of interactive elements that would keep the users excited and intrigued throughout the walking journey. A main installation at the main locations along with “hidden gems” on the way was our final concept.
Brand Identity
We wanted to create a brand that is short, easy to remember and noticeable but conveyed our mission clearly at the same time. Hence, the name “EX” which stands for “Explore, Experience, Exercise”, our 3 primary goals.
Final Concept
Located at Pier 16, Chinatown and World Trade Center (WTC), the main installations a part of the entire experience. The objective of the main installation is to attract the diverse crowd of NYC and prompt them to walk more. To start their journey, the users have to scan the QR code and get the digital map that will guide them to the hidden spots while simultaneously earning points based on the numbers of steps.
The digital map guides the users through the right path during their journey. Users can choose the path and destination of their choice. It shows all the spot marking and the points you have collected during your journey. Once you complete your journey, you get coupons which can be redeemed at various stores and activities in NYC.
